Mr. Westbrook is a LEED Accredited Professional, recognized as a leader and speaker in efficiency and whole-system integrated design across the spectrum from residential projects to large industrial facilities. His primary focus is on energy and water efficiency. Most of his experience is in heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning, but Mr. Westbrook is well versed in cooling plants, water systems, lighting, controls, emissions, materials, and landscaping. Part of his credibility comes from the fact that he doesn’t just speak about these topics—he has lived them, both professionally and personally.
Mr. Westbrook has over 28 years of design and operational experience with large, complex manufacturing facilities. He led the effort at Texas Instruments to design and build the first sustainable, LEED Gold Certified semiconductor manufacturing facility (“fab”) in the world. The 1.1 million square foot facility reduced energy use by 38%, reduced water use by 40%, and cut emissions by 50% by using waste heat recovery instead of boilers, and the TI team was able to achieve these savings in a facility that cost 30% less to build than the previous fab. He collaborated with the Rocky Mountain Institute on the project design. Mr. Westbrook has also worked with the International SEMATECH Manufacturing Initiative teams on industry-wide efficiency improvements and on green design standards. A colleague at ISMI dubbed Mr. Westbrook “the father of the green fab.”
